Chapter 17

Harper

Thankfully I find Mekin exactly where I’d left him. His sketchbook is in his lap and he has his head tilted back to catch the afternoon sun, his eyes closed.

I pause, trying to figure out again why he looks so different than when I first met him. It isn’t just that he’s better fed and not so beaten-down here. With his patchy beard gone, his chin-length blond hair hanging loose around his face, and my sketchbook clasped in his good hand, he almost looks like a different person altogether.

He looks…

His eyes flick open, breaking my train of thought, and he smiles at me happily.

“You’re in,” I say, grinning at him. “You can take summer classes.”

His smile turns into an excited laugh.

“Thank you, Harper.”

“You’re welcome. Now, let’s go home. I need to get Halliday to her new stable while it’s still light out.”

Mekin nods and then lowers his head, ushering me to go ahead of him.

I walk a few steps and he falls further behind, still moving with his gaze fixed on the ground.

“Um, what are you doing?” I ask, pausing to let him catch up.

He hesitates, looking at me worriedly. “It is the custom for servants to walk behind their masters, Harper. Is this not done here?”

“Hell, Mekin, I am in no way your master. You didn’t make me do that back in Moyland when I was supposed to be a servant.” But he had treated Ronan and the other slaves like they were nothing, I remember.

“We were on the expedition then, not in Fort Moy, so there was much freedom. In the fort, you and I would have both been made to bow to our masters.”

“That’s awful.” Just another reason I’m glad to be back in my own world.

“You own the house we live in, you saved my life; you are powerful. Here, as in Moyland, I am nothing.”

His dejected tone sparks an angry flame inside me.

“Kenzie’s uncle owns the house. I am just a freeloader like you. And my powers are sketchy at best. You are not nothing. You and I are the same, we’re equals.”

“The same?” His eyes widen. “Is…is Theo the same too?”

“Yes, of course.” I study his expression, trying to figure out what’s going on in his head. “There are no masters here. Even the teachers at Raleigh can’t really tell you what to do. I mean, you might get kicked out of school, but they can’t hurt you or anything.”

“Ronan has no master?” he asks uneasily.

“No, none at all. He is free.”

“Hmmm.”

“Ronan is a good man, he won’t hurt you, Mekin.”

“The Stralls are slaves in our world.”

“I know. I saw it with my own eyes. It was wrong to treat them like that and I think you know it.”

“He might want revenge,” Mekin says, gulping a little. “But I had no choice on how I treated him. It was the custom and I would have been punished for going against it.”

“Well, I think we can all agree that life at Fort Moy sucks. He might be angry with you, Mekin, he has every right to be, but he’s not going to attack you.
